"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly petitioned for the position.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the best bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to start a band."

"So everyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes track departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent resilience demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international fan base.

But the band will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
