Chelsea Manager Maresca Rejects Man City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh talk linking him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, addressed the ongoing rumours about his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, is under contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extension option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my attention, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.
Strain Following Previous Comments
Maresca's latest statement come in the wake of he described a recent two-day spell as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial words had fueled widespread talk of a potential disagreement between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would definitely remain at the club next season and called on supporters to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca revealed that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly available for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an unhealed issue that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation publicly, there has equally been no apology offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has become increasingly awkward, leading to fears it could undermine what has up to now been a promising beginning to the season.
Chelsea's on-field position is positive: they are fourth in the league, have qualified for the Carabao Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better European position with good results in their final matches.
The lingering question is whether this off-field situation might begin to disrupt a squad that was beginning to appear cohesive.
